Ryde Hospital
The origins of Ryde Hospital can be traced to the 1919 influenza pandemic, which highlighted the lack of hospital facilities in the Ryde and Eastwood districts. In August 1919, Ryde Council committed itself to establishing a local public hospital, and money previously raised for a local Anzac memorial was redirected towards the project.
The hospital was developed on the site of Denistone House, which the NSW Government had purchased in 1913 and used as a convalescent home from 1914. Plans for a general hospital were announced in 1928, and construction began in the early 1930s. Ryde District Soldiers' Memorial Hospital was officially opened in May 1934, serving both as a community hospital and as a memorial to those who had served in the First World War.
The new hospital initially had around 60 beds. Denistone House was first used as accommodation for nurses and domestic staff and was later converted to maternity use. By 1939, new maternity, private and intermediate wards and nurses' accommodation had increased the hospital's capacity considerably.
In 1974, Ryde District Soldiers' Memorial Hospital was officially renamed Ryde Hospital. It subsequently developed into an important general hospital providing medical, surgical, rehabilitation, maternity and other health services to the surrounding district.
A photograph in Ryde History Hub records the hospital's official opening on 12 May 1934, including R. W. D. Weaver, then Minister for Public Health, speaking at the ceremony.
