Rowland Thomas Sutton, 1848-1927

Rowland Thomas Sutton was a prominent Ryde alderman, community leader and Mayor of Ryde in 1906. Associated particularly with Gladesville, he played an active role in municipal government during a period of suburban growth and transport improvements. He and his wife Mary had 5 children. Together with his wife, he later donated the Sutton Memorial in Gladesville in memory of their son Joseph, leaving a lasting mark on the district's civic landscape.  

 

He was connected with the Education Department for some years, and was formerly a resident of Waverley and Gladesville. He was an alderman of Ryde Council for I6 years, and on two occasions was Mayor. Other offices held by Mr. Sutton were: Federal Government representative of repatriation, secretary of the Voluntary Workers' Association, founder and life member of the Gladesville Fire Brigade, president and life member of the Gladesville Parents and Citizens' Association, secretary Gladesville Presbyterian Church, speaker for Gladesville Debating Society, secretary for Ryde Bowling Green on two occasions, president Gladesville School of Arts, vice-president Drummoyne Bowling Green for three years, returning officer for the electorate of Ryde, and a member of the Kew Bowling Green, Victoria.
