Sutton Memorial Tramway Monument
DETAILS
Date Created circa 1910DescriptionDrinking fountain/column originally erected at the intersection of Victoria and Wharf Roads, Gladesville. Erected by Ryde Alderman (& sometime Mayor) Rowland Thomas Sutton and his wife Mary as a memorial to their son Joseph Rowland Sutton. The foundation stone was laid on 11 June, 1910 as part of the opening ceremony for the extension of the tram line from Gladesville to Ryde.
The inscription reads: Presented to the citizens of Gladesville by Alderman R.T. & Mrs Sutton in memory of their son Joseph born 14th August 1870 died 8th October 1909, this foundation stone was laid by the Hon. C.A. Lee, M.L.A. Minister of Public Works on the official opening of the Gladesville Ryde Tram 11th June 1910.
