George Lovell, 1832-1921

Personal information
Son of Thomas and Harriet Lovell. Married Eliza Dowzer and had 6 children.  Two of their sons died as infants, George in 1863 and Jacob in 1870, leaving Henry, George Alfred, Joseph Andrew and Thomas.  

Qualifications, occupations and interests
Operated the prosperous "Cheddar Hill" property on North Road, Ryde, spanning nine acres. George invested heavily in irrigation infrastructure across his nine-acre property, installing cisterns, sinking wells, and laying an extensive network of pipes. Powerful pumps lifted stored water for irrigation, and his innovative approach earned him a reputation as a leader in colonial horticulture.
The Lovell family was involved in New South Wales' first Arbor Day celebrations, when Governor Lord Carrington visited Ryde Public School and planted the inaugural tree. Several years later, in recognition of their support and service to the school, the teachers and students presented the Lovells with an Illuminated Address, which remains in the collection of the Ryde District Historical Society.
