Ryde Tramway Memorials: 1908 "turning of the sod"

DescriptionThere were two memorials unveiled in the suburb of Ryde related to the tramway. In 1908 there was a memorial for the 'first turning of the sod'. In 1910 there was a drinking fountain unveiled with the arrival of the first tram.
This paper is a chronology of the "turning of the sod" memorial from council minutes and newspapers.
The base of the "Drinking Fountain" memorial is now located in Banjo Paterson Park, Gladesville. The "turning of the sod" memorial is located on the footpath at the corner of Blaxland Road and Church Street, Ryde.
