Ryde Tramway Drinking Fountain Memorial
DETAILS
Date Created circa 1910DescriptionWhen the first tram arrived at Hatton's Flat on 11 June 1910, Charles Lee, Minister for Public Works, unveiled a drinking fountain memorial and ornamental lamp which had been erected by Ryde Council at the northern end of the flat.
By Late May the fountain was nearing completion - it was 'composed of Pyrmont stone and had a square base with a round column, and a neatly carved cap on top'. The fountain 'is fitted with two drinking cups, and will be surmounted by a powerful double lamp'(Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers' Advocate 21 May 1910), presumably so it could be used at night.
The fountain had a marble tablet inlaid in the base which read:
ERECTED
TO COMMEMORATE THE OPENING OF THE TRAM TO RYDE
11TH JUNE 1910
J. REDSHAW
MAYOR
(Extract from 'Ryde's tramways and tramway monuments' by Helen Patterson, Ryde District Historical Society)
