At a meeting reported in Cumberland Argus 26 September 1914 p8 Alderman Sutton said he would have to ask to be relieved of his official duties, owing to the continued and serious illness of the Mayoress ‘for the time mentioned.’ Moved that Alderman Redshaw be appointed acting Mayor during the period of his absence. The motion was carried unanimously.

(12) There appears to have been no Special meeting at the beginning of 1917 to elect the Mayor. Ald. Kelly continued as Mayor
(13) 'A fortnight ago a majority of the Ryde Council elected Alderman Kelly deputy Mayor, to look after matters during the absences of the Mayor, who is staying at Woy Woy with his wife. At last Council meeting, Alderman Rabone moved “that the resolution of the council, ‘that Mr Alderman Kelly be appointed deputy-Mayor during the Mayor’s absence from the district,’ be and is hereby rescinded.” The motion was carried by one vote.’ Cumberland Argus 20 June 1914 p8

NOTE: At regular Council meeting of 19 January 1917 there was communication from the Department of Local Government stating that the Minister for Local Government had postponed the municipal elections from 27 January 1917 to 30 June 1917
