Meadowbank Manufacturing Company Memorial
DETAILS
Date Created circa 1910DescriptionThis memorial fountain was erected in 1910 on the corner of Angas and See Streets, Meadowbank, to the memory of Granville William John White. White was the works manager of the Meadowbank Manufacturing Company from 1910 until his death at his home in Church Street, Ryde, on New Year's Day 1910. He was buried in the Field of Mars Cemetery.
According to an obituary in the Cumberland Argus & Fruitgrowers Advocate of January 8 1910 "it was on Mr White's advice that the company undertook the manufacture of tramway rolling stock, a branch of their works which has provided remunerative employment for a large number of men." The employees of the Company decided to erect a drinking fountain in memory of Mr. White and took up a subscription for this purpose. The fountain was unveiled on Saturday 2 July 1910 in a ceremony reported by the Cumberland Argus & Fruitgrowers Advocate on its issue of 9 July 1910.
The face of the fountain bore the words: To the memory of Granville White works manager for nine years of the Meadowbank Manufacturing Co, erected by the employees January 1910. Carved into the stone at he base of the fountain are the words: J. Redshaw, Mayor.
Over the ensuing years the original plaque was removed. In 1988 the memorial was restored on the intiative of the Ryde District Historical Society. The restored plaque reads: Erected by the men of the Meadowbank Manufacturing Works in memory of their esteemed late works manager Thomas [Granville William] White retired 1909, died 1910.
