Medusa is a apotropaic icon from ancient Greek mythology. I am inspired by Medusa's story and her reputation in classical Greek mosaics, Caravaggio's painting and Bernini's sculpture. Medusa was considered an desirable ideal. Until her dead transformed into dangerous snakes and her head placed onto a shield, transforming her into a guardian protector. The materials used in this work were also once considered a desirable ideal until they become broken or obsolete, and are transformed into waster that is dangerous and unrecyclable. Look into the mirror through the eyes of Medusa and you can see yourself transformed into a guardian and protector against plastics and other wastes.
Recycled materials used: polycarbonate irrigation tubing, empty black plastic filament reel, faulty black electrical cord, black lid from car wax lid, broken mirror, old Christmas ornaments, engineered wood, picture wire.
