(5) When Charles Whittaker was elected, the vote was tied and the Returning Officer gave his casting vote in favour of Ald. Whittaker. However, there were alleged informalities and Ald. Whittaker resigned his seat with a view to have another contest. It was alleged that married women and other disqualified people had voted and Ald. Whittaker was threatened with dire pains and penalties if he took his seat Cumberland Argus 8 March 1905 p2. From the Council minutes: ‘In compliance with an advertisement appearing in the Cumberland Argus March 8th 1905 … [a meeting was called] … for purpose of nominating and electing an Alderman for West Ward to serve the unexpired term of ex-Alderman Whittaker, resigned’. The poll was set for April 3. Charles Whittaker won that poll, again on the casting vote of the Returning Officer, after it was tied. ‘Charles Whittaker duly elected Alderman for the West Ward to serve the unexpired term of Alderman Whittaker’s, resigned.’

The Municipality of Ryde and the Municipality of Eastwood amalgamated on 1 January 1949.
Aldermen were elected for three years but in the first few years of the Council one alderman from each ward was obliged to resign, determined by who had received the least votes at the first election. Thereafter, as their three year term expired, the aldermen would retire but could seek re-election.
