(4) Resigned as alderman for East Ward: minuted 7 March 1901 in Ordinary minutes, replaced by Oswald Ernest Small.
On Council again from August 1901 as a result of an Extraordinary vacancy due to the resignation of Ald. H Lovell for East Ward. See Cumberland Argus 27 July 1901 p10 and Cumberland Argus 3 August 1901 p11
(5) There was reference in the Council minutes of 21 August 1901 under Correspondence in a letter from Mr H Lovell’s of Ald. Johnson’s ‘informal resignation’. This does not seem to have become formal as Ald. Johnson attends subsequent Council meetings
(6) Ald. Lovell recorded up to minutes 26 June 1901. By 10 July 1901 ‘Mr H Lovell’ was asking questions about irregularities in the election of the Mayor. He resigned for East Ward June/July 1901. Was replaced by Alexander Adams who had previously been on Council but had resigned. See Ordinary minutes of 21 August 1901 making reference to Lovell’s resignation. Also Cumberland Argus 27 July 1901 p10
(7) Resigned July 1901. Letter minuted at Ordinary meeting 10 July 1901. Extraordinary vacancy for West Ward filled by Charles Whittaker. See Cumberland Argus 27 July 1901 p10
(8) Meeting of electors 25 March 1901; poll taken 30 March 1901; 1 April 1901 (date of declaration of the vote) for East Ward for the unexpired part of Ald. Adam’s term. First Ordinary meeting attended 4 April 1901
(9) Filled Extraordinary vacancy for West Ward caused by resignation of Ald. E H Small. See Cumberland Argus 27 July 1901 p10 and Cumberland Argus 3 August 1901 p11
(10) Ald. Small was elected Mayor at a Special meeting on 13 February 1901; resigned. Letter of resignation minuted at Ordinary meeting of 10 July 1901
(11) Ald. Gallagher was elected Mayor at a Special meeting of 5 July 1901 for the balance of the municipal year. Council minutes of 10 July 1901 recorded a letter from Mr H Lovell requesting the Council Clerk make full enquiries as to the present position of the Mayor, supposed to have been elected, as he intended to see further into this matter. Then another Special meeting was held 12 July 1901 to elect the Mayor. (probably because Gallagher’s first election to Mayor had occurred before Ald. Small’s letter of resignation had been minuted). See Ordinary minutes of 21 August 1901 and Mr H Lovell (formerly Ald. Lovell) still questioning the Mayor’s validity

The Municipality of Ryde and the Municipality of Eastwood amalgamated on 1 January 1949.
Aldermen were elected for three years but in the first few years of the Council one alderman from each ward was obliged to resign, determined by who had received the least votes at the first election. Thereafter, as their three year term expired, the aldermen would retire but could seek re-election.
