Granny Smith Festival, 1988
By 1988, the Northern District Times (20 July 1988) reported that ‘the Granny Smith Festival now stands on its own and is funded by Ryde Council’.
The grand parade took place on 10 September along Lakeside Road, Glen Street, Shaftsbury Road and Rowe Street. The festival activities on that day centred on Eastwood Plaza and Rowe Street and consisted of free entertainment, stalls and displays featuring vintage cars, fire, police and ambulance displays, Scottish dancers, fashion parades.
The Family Gala Day, which was the conclusion of the festival, took place on Sunday 18 September at Ryde Park which, in addition to stalls, attractions and free entertainment included a Rock Variety Concert in the afternoon.
The week of the festival was filled with a variety of activities including an international church service at St Anne’s Church, heritage photographic display, story telling festival; even a bowls carnival! Apple trees were planted at Granny Smith Park on the 14 of September and 15 September was filled with entertainment at shopping centres in the area including at Top Ryde Shopping Centre, the Eastwood Centre, Eastwood Plaza which hosted a Dutch Street Organ!
